When I use the word “Adult” I use it differently than other people. Most people use the word “Adult” to refer to sexual areas of adulthood. But I use it to mean a person who is over the age of 18.
For example:
In a previous enterprise I was renting DVDs through a web site (a clone of NetFilx). I listed all the categories of DVDs that I was going to carry, action, adventure, romance etc. And I also put “Adult” as a category. Now these “Adult” DVDs were 18 certificate DVDs (there is no over 18 certificate in Ireland, movies either get a 18 certificate or they don’t get any certificate). These were movies like Basic Instinct and the “made for video soft porn” offerings. But my credit card company would not approve my merchant account because I was offering “Adult” products on my web site. I tried to explain that these were 18 certificate movies that can be found in even mainstream supermarkets, they wouldn’t accept me. I pointed out that every customer they had was an Adult as you have to be over 18 to get a credit card in the first place, no dice. So I changed the word “Adult” to “Erotic” and I got approved without question. I was offering the same products, but without the word “Adult” attached to them they perfectly acceptable.
So is was the word “Adult” that was unacceptable.
The word “Adult” seems to carry some special meaning for most other people that I seem to miss most of the time. Maybe other people use the word “Adult” as a code for concepts the would rather not speak out loud; ideas like erotic, sexual or, god forbid, pleasure.
When I use the word “Adult” I mean a person who is over the age of 18 and can legally make up their own mind.
